Our Story
Who We Are
Advanced Technological Institute Batticaloa was established in 1995 under the Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education (SLIATE) — one of fourteen ATI campuses spread across the country. Located in Main Street, Kovilkulam, Arayampathy, the institute brought government-funded higher education directly to the Eastern Province for the first time.
Founded in the aftermath of a challenging period in Sri Lanka's history, the institute was created with a clear mandate: to provide accessible, free higher education to students from the Batticaloa district who had passed the GCE Advanced Level examination but had limited pathways to tertiary education within their region.
In its early years, ATI Batticaloa offered foundational diploma courses, quickly establishing credibility through rigorous academic standards and a dedicated teaching faculty. By the early 2000s, the institute had formalised four Higher National Diploma programmes: HNDIT (Information Technology), HNDA (Accountancy), HNDE (English), and HNDTHM (Tourism & Hospitality Management).
Through the 2010s, the campus underwent significant infrastructure development — new computer laboratories equipped with modern hardware, upgraded lecture theatres, and expanded campus-wide internet connectivity transformed the student learning experience. These investments reflected SLIATE's commitment to aligning ATI Batticaloa's offerings with national and international industry standards.
Today, more than 30 years since its founding, ATI Batticaloa stands as the premier technical and professional education institution in the Eastern Province. Thousands of graduates have gone on to careers in finance, technology, hospitality, and education — many continuing to top-up degree programmes at universities both in Sri Lanka and abroad.
